CAPTURING THE MAGIC

When Joey Landreth recorded Dog Ear, he built a small, quirky, vintage-inspired amp which he used for many of the tones. It sounded perfect for a wide range of crunch tones — but a dimed small amp isn't exactly road-worthy. The Dirt Dog lets you give any amp the touch-sensitive feel & rich harmonics of vintage gear while drawing from Joey's modern-classic, rootsy & eclectic recorded sound.

VINTAGE BREAKUP

Part of what makes small vintage amps great is the unique way they distort when pushed to their limits. The Dirt Dog distills the oldschool bloom & sag that sound equally musical from barely distorted all the way up to 'about-to-explode' into a compact & reliable all-analog pedal.

THE TECHNICAL DETAILS

The Dirt Dog is an amp-like overdrive with a creamy, three-dimensional midrange. Try it at low Gain with Bite turned up for chimey edge-of-breakup, or with Level dimed for an out-of-control 'amp-on-10' sound. The way you combine the Gain & Level knobs fundamentally shapes the tone as it pushes your amp differently. The Bite knob handles treble response, while the Tone knob broadly shifts the midrange voice from snarlier and punchier to chewier and scooped. The controls are highly interactive — each knob's position substantially affects the response of the others.

DESIGN & STORY

Joey has been an important influence at Revv since almost the very beginning. When the two-time Juno-winning Bros. Landreth set out to create Dog Ear — a deeply personal record inspired by their spontaneous live sound — Joey built a handmade amp based on small, easy-to-distort amps from the '40s and used it for lots of the gain tones. The Dirt Dog captures that lightning in a bottle: broad, organic distortion that can get gnarly and even sputter at maximum settings, yet also sweeten up cleans and deliver those coveted 'edge of breakup' dynamics.
